IS IT REALLY A SCIENCE?

WHAT ISSUES DOES IT ADDRESS?

WHAT IS ITS BASIS?

Some or the other of these questions are there in people’s minds. Years of stigmatization and improper information have led to many misgivings. Even many among the medical colleagues and well educated people have their reservations in this regard. We all have witnessed people with (POTENTIALLY TREATABLE) mental illnesses being segregated from their families and society at large, and thereby leading a life full of misery.

But WHY IS THIS HAPPENING even when we have all the knowledge and scientifically based treatments with regard to these problems. PSYCHIATRY as a well validated branch of medical science is dedicated to the evaluation and management of the mental illnesses. Years of psychiatric researches have yielded a vast amount of information related to once dreaded disorders. Millions of patients who were once disregarded as insane are now being successfully treated and thus living a productive life. Many symptoms which were once regarded as occurring due to paranormal activities have been found out to be due to neurochemical changes in the brain. Illnesses treated by psychiatrists have been demonstrated to be arising due to biological, psychological and social causes. They can be treated but require only timely recognition and proper TREATMENT BY THOSE WHO ARE REALLY TRAINED IN THIS FIELD.

All those with some or the other mental illness deserve comparable opportunities and rights which the human societies enjoy. If this is done properly not only be the caregivers but the whole society, it can bring new hopes and a better quality in their lives. Only a little awareness among us and sharing it with those around us can gradually remove the stigma attached to mental illness and many of our near ones might benefit.
